Made for the Vinyl Art Project Live curacted by Candy Choi, I created a broken record live at the event as the other artists were performing. My volunteer for this work was the super talented filmmaker, beat maker, record lable owner, producer, photogpaher and hip hop afficianado Pritt Kalsi. He gave me the record Mark B & Dialect “Fresh, Fly, Wild & Bold” released on Pritt’s own label King of the Beats.

This record was particularly important for Pritt because Mark B was a long time friend and collaborator who had sadly passed away in 2016. This was the last record that he relaeased after a critically acclaimed career in hip-hop. Pritt told me of their deep and lasting friendship, tales of digging for records and their final words. It was a truly moving story and once again, as with all the ‘broken records’ work, showed very clearly the impact that vinyl record culture can have on its participants, and the closeness that sharing music can engender.

Whilst craving the record with Pritt’s story, on the night of the event, I also placed a contact mic on the awl that used to make the engraving. This sound, along with Pritt’s interview, and a series of samples identified as Pritt’s favorites from the Mark B’s music, formed the basis of live sound piece I created for the performance. No recording of the sound work was made.
